Scaling-Up Creative Businesses in the West Midlands
Recognising a gap in the market, in 2019 the West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA) launched a programme to provide concentrated support to Creative Businesses ready to take the next step to reach higher sales and investment.
Titled the Creative Enterprise Scale-Up Programme, it sought established creative businesses turning over approximately £150,000 with 3-5 employees and offered an intense scheduled of peer-group mentoring sessions, topical workshops and opportunities to meeting with and present to investors to achieve measureable success within a 6-month period. And the support was fully-funded by the WMCA following an interview and application process.
The WMCA knew it needed non-government partners to deliver the actual programme to ensure it was a success. Because of the combined experience, expertise and knowledge our team possess, the Programme Director selected Rockfine to offer hands-on support with the recruitment process for each of the cohorts. This included sourcing relevant companies in the West Midlands region (Birmingham, Black Country and Coventry), processing the applications with each company who qualified for the scheme and adding them to the cohort that aligned with them, ensuring they maximised all of the benefits of the programme offered.
Our support received positive feedback from the Programme Director, programme team and cohort members – this resulted in Rockfine being asked for further support as the scheme progressed. B.D. was requested as a personal mentor for Birmingham, Coventry and the Black Country cohort members, scheduling 1:1 sessions with companies who were keen to expand on their guidance and learnings.
With the assistance of Rockfine, results are already showing. Businesses who participated in the cohorts and workshops have reported new contracts, creation of jobs, entrance to new markets and investor interactions. Companies in the creative sector flourishing will be incredible for the region – Rockfine are excited to continue being a part of Government schemes that are designed to help businesses grow.
“At the very first meeting it was apparent we are being set up to succeed at short-term measurable growth. We have already adopted the ‘Think Big’ concept and are applying it to how we present ourselves outwardly and towards the business growth, bringing in new business and bigger business plans – and secured new work in the first week.”
